Dr Michael Shen (Honggang)
Dr Shen grew up in China. He finished his Chinese undergraduate and postgraduate legal education in China with an LL.B in Law and an LL.M in International Law. From 2001 to 2002, Michael was a visiting scholar at the School of Law, University of Leeds researching the free trade regime within the international trade law area. In 2004, Michael received his second LL.M degree in International and European Business Law from the University of Leeds. Michael received his PhD in international economic law at the Centre for International Governance at the University of Leeds in 2008.
Before coming to England, Michael had been teaching International Economic Law, International Law, and Private International Law in the law school of a Chinese university as a member of their academic staff. Michael was also appointed as the head of WTO Affairs Consultation Service Centre at the Chinese University in China. As the head of this institution, Michael's roles have included structuring and managing the institute, providing WTO consultation to government departments and private companies.
At the same time, Michael also worked in the private practice of several Chinese law firms, and was involved in setting up and managing law firms in China, such as Spring Law Office and Xueyuan Law Firm. His practice areas mainly focused on Foreign Direct Investment in China, International Trade Law, WTO Law, and International Investment Law.
During his academic and legal practice work, Michael has set up extensive contacts in China. He is conscious of the ever-growing markets in China for all types of business. With his strengths in Chinese law and English legal knowledge, Michael is involved in various consultancy projects for Chinese and British clients and oversees the marketing of Chinese companies in the UK and British Companies in China. Michael's specialised areas of practice include: International trade and investment, particularly the practice between the UK and China; WTO law and WTO dispute settlement procedure; Chinese trade policies and laws; Analysis of the Chinese investment environment and policy; and Chinese local regulations and policies.

- consultant for a major Yorkshire law firm, with the aim of developing the legal service market in China and developing alliances with Chinese law firms
- consultant for a UK design firm in setting up its Chinese WOFE
- consultant for a UK Dental material company with the aim of setting up a Chinese Joint Venture
- consultant for a Chinese energy company for investing in the UK and Europe
