Professor Jeremy Barnett

Jeremy Barnett is a practicing Barrister and member of St Pauls House Chambers, Leeds. He has specialised in serious fraud for over 15 years and is head of Regulatory Breach . He was appointed a Crown Court Recorder in 2000 and sit in both Criminal and Civil cases. Jeremy Barnett has been an elected member of the Bar Council for 9 years and was Chair of the Bar Council IT panel from 2002 - 2006 (he is currently the Vice Chair).

He was appointed Visiting Professor of Law Informatics at Leeds University where he lead the Court 21 project (www.court21.ac.uk). He is also a member of the Regulatory and Disciplinary Lawyers Association and the Health and Safety Lawyers Association.

For a number of years his practice has been concentrated on Fraud and Regulatory cases.

Jeremy has a keen focus on Carbon Law and with this in mind, he has been a member of the BCS carbon footprint working group which is preparing guidance and best practice for data centres and other service providers, considering design, cooling efficiencies, the use of virtulisation technology, disposal etc.

In 2008 he was appointed as a legal member of the Accountancy and Actuarial Discipline Board which is the independent investigative and disciplinary body for accountants and acuaries in the UK. The focus of the AADB is on substantial cases where the public interest is affacted, usualy involving companies which are listed on the stock exchange.

He has represented a number of clients before various disciplinary authorities including the Chartered Institute of Accountants, The Law Society and The Financial Services Authority.

His practice includes representing a number of companies who import and/or manufacture in China. The defence of 'due diligence' is often raised, and involves expert consideration of best practice in corporate governance.

Jeremy Barnett is editor of www.regulatorybreach.com which is an online magazine for solicitors, which contains a database of case reports in a number of areas including disciplinary proceedings.

Jeremy Barnett's legal practice which extends over 26 years, and has concentrated in advising directors, shareholders and managers of businesses in all aspects of corporate governance. Clients range from small to medium sized businesses through to PLC's and often require consideration of financial reporting, best practice and management skills including Total Quality Management. He has also represented Solicitors and Chartered Accountants charged with offences of dishonesty.
